Switched On Pop: What happens When Justin Bieber Samples Your Music

The producers sit down with a music artist who makes different samples of beats that any other artist can use for free. Then they start talking about how Justin Bieber used this sample that he made and then someone on twitter got mad that "Justin stole his sample." Therefore, he had to reply and say "Actually I made the sample." Then Justin tweeted back and now this artist is making more samples for artists to use.  The producers go on about talking how easy it is to get a sample of whatever you want. You could get a sample for less than a dime and use it without getting copyrighted. I never knew this was a thing until now, but apparently producers have been doing it for decades and it's called sampling. They talked to the CEO of the largest sampling company today. They brought up some good points for better understanding, like sampling is very common now and you can't go very far without using sampling. Also, every time you download a sample, you are ...

"Tim McGraw" By: Taylor Swift (Week 12)

THIS IS MY ELEMENT. This era of country is my absolute favorite music. I loved Taylor Swift and everything she sang. It was sad when she decided to go all wack and start singing a different style than she is used to. I loved this song when I was younger and forgot about it until I saw the title. This song is about Taylor Swift liking a guy and being head over heels, but then he doesn’t notice her. Then whenever he thinks about these different things he should be thinking about her because of her all the memories they had.  This song makes me really happy because it makes me think of all the good memories with or without boys. Memories are the best way to remember someone because those are the happy times and those are the times that should be looked back on. The lyrics are the best part of this song, the melody and the instruments in the background really helps the song come to life and really helps the lyrics be the focus point. My favorite part of the song was the chorus becau...

"What's Love Got to Do With It" Tina Turner (Week 11)

I chose this song because one of my favorite bands (D.N.C.E) did a cover/remake of this song. I really liked this song from them so I thought I should listen to the person who actually sang it. The song is all about a girl meeting a boy and telling how she reacts with this boy. She is talking about what she feels when she is around this boy. She says that her pulse gets super high and she doesn’t know what to do. Then goes on to say that love has nothing to do with these feelings because love is an emotion and what is going on with her is a feeling.  This was the time where covers were becoming very common. I liked the cover of this song more than the original song. This song made me happy because of the beat and melody. But also it is a really weird and sad song if we are listening to the lyrics. Although the lyrics really really surprised me because it sounds like it will be a love song but then it turns out to be almost the opposite to what we expect. Overall it is a really ...

Switched on Pop: "Baby Shark" Phenomenon (with Andrea Silenzi)

I picked the podcast titled “The ‘Baby Shark’ Phenomenon (with Andrea Silenz).” I picked this because when this song came out I was working in a day care and I had to listen to it all day because that's all the kids wanted to listen to. They bring in a new father, Charlie, who doesn’t really know a lot about the newest music trends in the world. The main focus on this show was baby shark.  They started talking about what everyone in the world is revolving around this song. Disney is making a TV series, Kellogg in making a cereal, and on and on. They then go on to talk about giving birth and what songs to listen to when pushing, which was really weird because I never had thought about how songs can impact birth. My favorite part was when they started talking about all the mash-ups or viral videos that have to do with the baby shark song. My favorite was when they talked about one little kid trying to get alexa to play the baby shark song. It was really funny because I had never s...

Switched on Pop: Who's Afraid of the Sounds of TikTok (W Cat Zhang)

I chose the podcast Titled “Who’s Afraid of the Sound of TikTok?” I picked this one because I downloaded the app as a joke and now I am addicted to it. Everyone is addicted to it and it's kind of crazy. Everything I look at or read is all about TikTok.  They started out by introducing a new dad who doesn’t really know a lot about newer music. Their goal was to expose this dad to TikTok because every kid is using it now. They went throughout the whole podcast criticizing the songs that are used to make TikToks. My favorite part was when they brought up the “woah.” This dad had no idea what it was and when they showed him what it was he just was mesmerized and didn’t know how to feel about it. Another part they criticized was that TikToks use a raspy sound like they are filmed in a bedroom (which they are supposed to be, that is what makes them what they are), and then the dad said “boomers should like this music because it kind of sounds like a record.”  They ended the po...

"Play that Funky Music" By: Wild Cherry (Week 10)

First of all, I have to add that I started by watching the band perform this song live and let me tell you, I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the whole thing. Everything about it was so funny. I encourage you to watch them perform because you will not be disappointed. But as for the song, it is really good. It has a good beat and melody even though the lyrics say mostly the same thing throughout the entire song.   This song is just a fun song. It doesn't really tell a story or have any hidden messages behind it. I believe that this was a time of just fun songs that don’t really have any meaning to them. This song came out in the 70’s so everyone was just looking for a good time and trying to have as much fun as they can. This song is about having no worries and just listening to music whenever they can. The song really is the definition of “groovy.” There really isn’t any part of the song that I hated. It was an all around good song.  The song was crazy. It made m...

"Hotel California" By: The Eagles (Week 9)

This song was recommended to me by one of my good friends and I can say that I was not disappointed. It started out kind of slow but then the beat changed and it was a completely different song to me. That was probably my favorite part of the song, when the melody changed and different instruments were introduced. But also once he started singing, that hit hard too because it was completely different from the beginning part of the song. This is a song about the performer waking up somewhere in a hotel and finding himself not knowing anything that had happened the day before. He goes on to tell about everything that is happening and his view on everyone that is around him. This song is also about the different things that they haven’t had in awhile and he wants to have back. The instruments in the back really complimented the performer because it was just the right amount; they weren’t overpowering but they could still be heard through the lyrics. There are not a lot of controversial...
